Elon Musk Backs AfD, Sparks Protests Across Germany

Date: January 26, 2025
American tech billionaire Elon Musk made headlines on Saturday with a surprise live video address at the campaign launch of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Halle. Speaking to an audience of approximately 4,500 AfD supporters, Musk endorsed the party as Germany’s “best hope” ahead of the upcoming snap elections on February 23, 2025.

Musk's remarks, made alongside AfD leader Alice Weidel, included calls for German national pride and warnings against the perceived dangers of multiculturalism. His appearance drew thunderous applause from AfD supporters but ignited fierce backlash across the nation.

Germany, facing snap elections after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government, has seen a surge in AfD's popularity. The party recently became the first far-right group to win a state election since the Nazi era. However, it remains heavily criticized for its anti-immigration policies, with all mainstream political parties refusing to collaborate with it.

Nationwide Protests Against AfD and Musk’s Remarks

While Musk's endorsement was celebrated at the rally, it galvanized tens of thousands of Germans to take to the streets in protest.
In Berlin, an estimated 35,000 people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, singing anti-fascist songs and displaying illuminated letters spelling "hope and resistance."

Cologne saw approximately 40,000 demonstrators, where climate activist Luisa Neubauer warned against the dangers of racism and anti-climate policies promoted by far-right ideologies.

Protesters accused AfD of endangering Germany’s democratic values and criticized Musk for attempting to influence German politics.

Musk’s involvement in the German election has raised eyebrows among European leaders. Known for his close alliance with U.S. President Donald Trump and his support for populist movements, Musk has amplified far-right rhetoric, including calls for the release of British activist Tommy Robinson and criticism of pro-immigration policies.
German officials have expressed concerns about Musk’s potential influence on the election, accusing him of meddling in domestic affairs. Despite this, Musk has remained steadfast, claiming the outcome of Germany’s election could have global implications.

“This election could decide the entire fate of Europe, maybe the fate of the world,” Musk declared during his speech.

Elon Musk, AfD, and the Battle for Germany's Soul

Germany is no stranger to political turmoil, but the events of the past weekend have taken the discourse to a global stage. Elon Musk, one of the most influential figures in technology, has thrown his weight behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The timing couldn’t be more critical. With snap elections looming after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition, Germany stands at a crossroads. AfD’s surge in popularity marks a seismic shift in the country’s political landscape, raising questions about its future direction.

Musk’s endorsement has added fuel to an already blazing fire. In his speech, he championed German nationalism and criticized multiculturalism—ideas central to AfD’s controversial platform. While Musk framed his remarks as support for German pride, many see them as a dangerous nod to divisive, far-right rhetoric.

The backlash has been swift. Across Germany, tens of thousands took to the streets, chanting for unity and denouncing AfD’s policies. Their message was clear: Germany’s identity is built on diversity and inclusion, not exclusion and division.

So, why is Musk inserting himself into German politics? Perhaps his alignment with populist movements worldwide offers a clue. Musk has repeatedly voiced support for figures and ideologies that challenge the political establishment, from Donald Trump in the U.S. to far-right activists in Europe.

But Musk’s involvement raises deeper concerns. When a billionaire with global reach endorses a political party, it blurs the line between influence and interference. His critics argue that his actions could destabilize Germany’s democracy and embolden extremist movements across Europe.
As February’s election approaches, one thing is certain: Germany is facing a critical moment. The choices made in the coming weeks will not only shape its future but could also send ripples across the world. Whether Musk’s endorsement helps or hinders AfD remains to be seen, but his involvement has already ensured that this election will be one for the history books.
